Brief Introduction:
For a long time, I wasn't truly convinced that online
pan flute lessons could bear good fruit. After all, decades of teaching
experience had taught me how important it is for me to hear a student
breathing right beside me, to observe their posture, and to catch even
the smallest detail from up close. For the same reason, I have also
never offered group lessons, as I consider it essential for a teacher
to be able to fully concentrate on each student individually.
But then, a few years ago, a young woman from China contacted me, very
determined to take online lessons with me. I shared my concerns with
her, as outlined above—but she didn’t give up. So I eventually agreed,
and today I must say: it was a good decision, one that has led to many
positive experiences. It was amazing how well she was able to follow
my instructions even in the first year, and how quickly she progressed.
To this day, she takes regular lessons with me, and several more online
students have joined since.
Some of these students, after initially studying online, later attended
my seminars in Reutlingen or Garching. Others, whom I had been regularly
teaching in person, switched to online lessons during the pandemic.
A particularly special experience was when the aforementioned Chinese
student—whose insistence had prompted my journey into online teaching—surprised
me by visiting during my vacation on the island of Koh Phangan, Thailand,
after a year of online lessons, to take a week of in-person classes.
Upon hearing about this, one of my students from Taiwan immediately
decided to join as well.
So, each day, I walked with both of them to a quiet spot in the jungle
to give individual lessons. Sheet music was tucked into various plants,
from time to time a “wild” dog would wander by, lie down in the grass,
and listen. The farmer who owned the land looked on with curiosity,
but kindly let us be and even laughed.
For me, this was a beautiful experience on a personal level, and a truly
positive surprise from a teacher’s perspective: the impression I had
formed of both students during our online sessions matched exactly what
I observed in person. It was this moment that convinced me to continue
offering online lessons in the future—because I had seen firsthand that
they can indeed be fruitful. And now, if you might be interested, feel
free to read on for detailed information:
What You’ll Need:
A strong desire to learn how to play the pan flute—regardless
of your preferred musical style.
A pan flute built in the “Romanian style.” Whether your instrument is
suitable—even if just as a beginner’s flute—is something we can discuss
together. But to be clear: I do not exclusively recommend instruments
from my own workshop!
Please avoid using a smartphone for lessons—it’s simply too small. The
minimum should be a tablet or a laptop, ideally a desktop PC with a
large monitor. Everything should be set up so that you can play standing,
and I can clearly see your upper body. When needed (by taking a step
back), I should also be able to see you from head to toe. A standard
webcam is sufficient these days.
For audio, wireless Bluetooth headphones are recommended to avoid echoes.
Wireless is important for freedom of movement!
A reasonably fast internet connection. A wired connection may be more
stable than Wi-Fi. I’ve had good experiences with Microsoft Teams and
Google Meet, but I’m open to using other platforms as well.
Lesson Times:
I usually teach on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and
Fridays between 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM (Central European Time).
Each lesson is 60 minutes long.
Lessons don’t have to be scheduled weekly—they can be arranged on a
flexible or long-term basis. No dependency on school holidays!
For students in other time zones, I’m happy to adjust to what works
for you. For example, I teach students in East Asia at 2:00 or 3:00
PM my time, which is 8:00 or 9:00 PM for them.
Fees:
Each 60-minute online lesson costs €40. Payment can be
made via bank transfer or PayPal—we’ll sort everything out together.
Naturally, I will also issue proper invoices.
I also offer a so-called "five-lesson card." If you book one
of these for the first time, you’ll receive the first lesson for free—so
six lessons in total! If you purchase another five-lesson card later
on, you’ll additionally receive a free product of your choice from my
music publishing house (www.muscal-verlag.com). This offer applies to
every additional five-lesson card, which costs €200.
Scheduling and invoicing are handled easily via email or at the end
of each lesson during our online conversation.
You’re also welcome to book individual lessons. These do not have to
be paid in advance.
If I’ve piqued your curiosity, feel free to contact me by email. We
can also arrange a free introductory online meeting, where you can get
to know me without any obligation and where we can address many of your
questions.
I look forward to hearing from you!
Warm regards,
Ulrich Herkenhoff
